Magical Alice in Wonderland-themed dinner
Down the rabbit hole and into the depths of uShaka Marine World’s enchanting aquarium - transformed into a magical world of smiling cats, croquet-playing cards, mushrooms and roses - was the heart of Wonderland.
This intoxicating scene formed the backdrop of the annual uShaka Golden Spear Tenants’ Awards ceremony and dinner held on Tuesday, November 10 - a highly anticipated event that pays tribute to the uShaka Village Walk tenants. Contributions made by the tenants throughout the year are acknowledged in the form of awards based on retail achievements for the 2014 – 2015 year.
Immersing themselves in the Alice in Wonderland theme, guests were transformed from retailers to March Hares, Queens of Hearts and regimental playing cards, while enjoying the entertainment provided by violinist, Anthon, and the performers from Roots & Wings. Leading the guests further down the rabbit hole into the mystical land of the 11th annual awards was the outlandish Mad Hatter, played by the irrepressible Peter Court, who took his role as master of ceremonies to another level.
Welcoming new tenants to the event and thanking long-serving tenants, uShaka Village Walk’s retail executive, Greg Jacobson, congratulated everyone for their endurance, creativity and flexibility which ensured the return of customers to uShaka.
The crowd was then transfixed by guest speaker and humorist Gavin Sharples, who focused his inspiring and comedic address on sustainable business success. Discussing his 21-year experience in searching for the secret to success, Sharples explained his insights into why some businesses thrive when others don’t, in the same market.
He said the secret to “health, wealth, wisdom, love, joy and abundance” was found in “change, innovation and creativity” or “chinking” as he described it. Giving relevant examples from the music and technology industries, Sharples clearly outlined how a lack of change and innovation led to the fast demise of some of the world’s leading brands such as Nokia and Kodak.
Building on the positive momentum, uShaka Marine World CEO, Stella Khumalo gave a short, heartfelt introduction before the awards were handed out, commenting on the importance of working together to ensure retail success in a competitive market.
The tenants’ awards are divided into six retail categories, and are based on the sales per square meter from June 2014 to July 2015. There also five special awards, including the newly introduced and already highly sought-after Green Award, which is awarded to the retailer who has a passion for the environment and implements this into the daily running of their business. The inaugural Green Award was won by Maestro Continental for its comprehensive adaptation of every element of the business to embrace conservation values, including recycling and using sustainable products.
The coveted uShaka Golden Spear Tenant of the Year award went to Silver Spear SPUR, which has been based at uShaka Village Walk since its inception. The company’s commitment to participation in all tenant marketing forums, point safety committee and the majority of uShaka Marine World events as well as its outstanding family-orientated service, well-trained staff and excellent fare saw it take the top prize.
